Privacy policy

IzzySpells is a talking letterboard. The child spells on the board; the parent pays for it, once, if they decide to keep it.

There is no account, and there is no server. Nothing is collected, nothing is uploaded, and nobody is identified — not during the free days, and not after somebody buys it. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to sign in to.

Nothing on the board ever leaves the tablet. Every word, every sentence, every saved phrase and every setting is on the device and on no server anywhere. There is nowhere in the app to send them and no way to ask for them.

What the app stores on the device

About the board. The app never asks who is using it — there is no name, no date of birth, no diagnosis, no photograph and no notes, and no way to add any:

• the settings: voice, speed, pitch, board options;
• the phrases spoken from it. Pressing the return key at the foot of the board reads the message aloud and keeps it, so a phrase somebody needs often is there next time. The fifty most recent are held, and any of them can be deleted from Saved messages;
• the message currently on the board, so closing the app mid-sentence does not lose it.

About the device:

• whether the app has been bought. A yes or no, kept so the board opens straight away and keeps working with no connection at all;
• when the app was first opened, which is when the free days started;
• the parental lock PIN, if one is set. It is stored as a hash rather than as the digits, but it is a child lock and not security: four digits is ten thousand combinations, and anyone with the device and a file browser can get past it. Please do not reuse a PIN that matters.

Deleting the app removes all of it. Clearing the app's data does the same without uninstalling. There is nowhere else for any of it to be, so there is nothing else to ask us to delete.

One qualification about backups. If you have turned on your device's own backup (Back up to Google Drive on Android, or iCloud Backup on iOS), the operating system includes this app's stored data in it, the same as it does for other apps. That copy is made by the device to your own account, is encrypted by the operating system, and is not visible to us: we receive nothing either way. Turning that backup off, or excluding IzzySpells from it, is done in the device's own settings.

What leaves the device

One thing, and it is a question about the purchase. The app asks the App Store or Google Play whether this device's store account has bought it. That question carries a store receipt and nothing else. It is never told that a child exists: not a name, not a board, not a setting.

There is no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, and no profile of anybody. There is no company between the app and the store: it talks to Apple's StoreKit and Google's Play Billing directly, and neither of them reports anything back to us about who you are.

One honest qualification about speech: to speak, the app hands the text on the board to the speech service built into the operating system: AVSpeechSynthesizer on iOS, android.speech.tts on Android. What that service does with the text is governed by the device's own settings, and some Android speech engines download voices or synthesise speech on the maker's servers. IzzySpells does not choose that and cannot see it. Selecting a voice marked as on-device, in the operating system's speech settings, keeps everything local.

The purchase

The app is bought once, through Apple's App Store or Google Play. Those companies take the payment and hold the payment details. We never see a card number, a name or an address, and neither does the app.

Because the purchase belongs to your Apple or Google account rather than to any account of ours, it restores on any device signed in to that same store account, and it survives reinstalling the app. It does not carry between Apple and Google, because they do not honour each other's receipts and this app holds no identity that could bridge them. Buying on Android and then moving to an iPhone means buying it again there.

Children

The app is intended for people aged 13 and over, and the person who buys it must be 18 or over. It is not directed to children under 13 and is not in Apple's Kids Category.

The person using the board is never asked for anything. They do not sign in, because nobody does, and nothing they spell is ever sent anywhere. The app never asks who is using it: there is no name to type, no profile to make, and no field anywhere that would take one.

It shows no advertising and contains no third-party marketing. The only links out of the app are to this policy and to the terms, from the payment screen, which the stores require to be reachable from there. It does contain one purchase, the one that unlocks the app. Apple and Google ask for the account holder's password, Face ID or fingerprint before any money moves, so buying it takes whoever holds the store account, and the account charged is theirs. If you share a tablet with a child and want a further lock, your device's own Screen Time or Family Link settings can require approval for every purchase.

Deleting your data

Uninstall the app, or clear its data in the device's own settings. That is the whole of it, because there is nowhere else anything is kept. There is also a page explaining this.

Deleting it does not undo the purchase. That belongs to your Apple or Google account, so it survives, and it can be restored on any device signed in to that store account — from Restore purchase on the payment screen, which the menu reaches at any time.

Permissions

The app requests no runtime permissions on either platform: no camera, no microphone, no contacts, no location, and no access to the files on the device. On Android it declares two permissions that are granted automatically and without a prompt: billing, which Google Play requires in order to sell anything, and internet, which the purchase check uses. Neither is used for anything else.

Who is responsible

IzzySpells is published by EAIA LLC, a limited liability company registered in Florida, United States, trading as IzzyLifeApp, which can be reached at admin@izzylifeapp.com.

We hold no data about you, so there is no data controller relationship here and nobody to transfer anything to. We use no processors: there is no analytics service, no crash reporter, no backend, and no subscription service. Apple and Google handle the payment as principals in their own right, under their own policies, and we never see a card.

Because nothing is collected, the rights that laws such as the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR and the CCPA give you over personal data — to see it, correct it, take a copy of it, or have it deleted — have nothing here to apply to. If you believe otherwise, write to the address above and we will look into it and answer you. You are also free to complain to a regulator without coming to us first: in the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office, and in the EU it is the data protection authority for the country you live in.
